How it works

Consultation

  • The pharmacist independent prescriber (PIP) sees the patient in a private consultation room.
  • They take a medical history, assess symptoms, check medication use, and possibly perform basic observations (e.g. blood pressure, temperature).
  • If needed, they can also access the patient's NHS Summary Care Record or Welsh GP Record for relevant clinical info.

Clinical decision & Prescribing

  • Based on their assessment, the pharmacist makes a diagnosis or clinical decision.
  • If treatment is appropriate, they write a prescription directly — without needing GP approval.
  • This may include prescribing for acute conditions (e.g. infections), long-term conditions (e.g. hypertension), or minor ailments.

Advice, support & follow up

  • The medicine is dispensed on-site at the pharmacy.
  • The pharmacist gives advice on how to take the medicine, possible side effects, and what to do if symptoms worsen.
  • They may schedule a follow-up or refer the patient to another service if necessary.

Urinary Tract Infection (16-64)

A urinary tract infection, commonly known as UTI, is a painful and uncomfortable condition that can affect the bladder, kidneys, and urethra. Symptoms may include burning during urination, frequent urges to urinate, and cloudy or foul-smelling urine. It is important to seek medical treatment to prevent further complications.

Tonsilitis

After experiencing a sore throat for days, John finally went to the doctor and was diagnosed with tonsillitis. He had to take antibiotics and rest for a week to fully recover from the inflammation of his tonsils. It was a painful experience, but now John makes sure to take better care of his immunity.

Insect Bites

Avoiding insect bites is important for anyone living in the UK, but if you do get bitten, don't panic. Visit a local pharmacy for over-the-counter products such as antihistamines or hydrocortisone cream to relieve itching and swelling. It's always a good idea to be prepared for unexpected insect encounters.

Chest Infection

Our pharmacy offers a comprehensive chest infection service to provide relief and care for patients suffering from respiratory illnesses. Through our expert pharmacists, we provide fast and accurate diagnosis, prescribe appropriate medication, and offer personalized advice for managing symptoms and preventing future infection. Trust us for quality healthcare solutions.

Earache

A pharmacy ear ache service provides over-the-counter remedies and advice for individuals experiencing ear pain. Customers can consult with a pharmacist, who may recommend ear drops, pain relievers, or refer them to a healthcare provider if necessary. The service aims to offer quick relief and guidance on managing symptoms, ensuring proper use of medications and addressing any concerns about ear health.

Minor Skin Infection & Various Skin Conditions

Minor skin infections can cause discomfort and inconvenience, which is why it's important to seek treatment at a trusted  pharmacy. With the right medication and care, these infections can be easily treated, preventing any further complications. Don't underestimate the power of proper treatment for your skin health.

Gout (Previously diagnosed)

A trip to the pharmacy is required to obtain medication for a sudden gout flare-up. The pain from the condition is severe, necessitating fast relief through appropriate treatment. Pharmacies provide access to medications and professional guidance from pharmacists, making them essential for managing acute health issues like gout.

Shingles (Not on the face)

Shingles is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is also responsible for chickenpox. It typically presents as a painful rash that can develop into blisters and scabs. Although it may be uncomfortable, shingles can usually be treated with antiviral medication and resolves within a few weeks.
