How it works
Consultation
- The pharmacist independent prescriber (PIP) sees the patient in a private consultation room.
- They take a medical history, assess symptoms, check medication use, and possibly perform basic observations (e.g. blood pressure, temperature).
- If needed, they can also access the patient's NHS Summary Care Record or Welsh GP Record for relevant clinical info.
Clinical decision & Prescribing
- Based on their assessment, the pharmacist makes a diagnosis or clinical decision.
- If treatment is appropriate, they write a prescription directly — without needing GP approval.
- This may include prescribing for acute conditions (e.g. infections), long-term conditions (e.g. hypertension), or minor ailments.
Advice, support & follow up
- The medicine is dispensed on-site at the pharmacy.
- The pharmacist gives advice on how to take the medicine, possible side effects, and what to do if symptoms worsen.
- They may schedule a follow-up or refer the patient to another service if necessary.
